The Radiant Resonance
The Radiant Resonance :RuoHeng Li's Artistic Energy Field
The Aesthetics of Modernity Begins with Baudelaire’s “Eternal in the Transitory” and “Poetry in History”.Thus, art must simultaneously express, through symbolic tension, the broken and the eternal, death and rebirth; it must also make the cyclical return of the past and the
unknown anticipation of the future shine forth in clear form.
If an artist possesses an international vision, wandering the world in the posture of a feminine Ulysses—from war to peace, from combat to contemplation, from West to East, plunging deeply into the dilemmas of the contemporary soul—then the art she constructs is no longer merely a forceful union of concept and painting; it becomes the building of a radiant, resonant energy field. Ruoheng Li is precisely such an artist. The new solo exhibition at Gen Gallery marks an intermediate station in the world tour that will connect China with Mexico and China with Spain. It is also an artistic dream journey traversing diverse cultures and civilizations. What her works bring us is a profound crosscultural and trans-historical resonance.
Ruoheng Li’s painting continues the pearl-lit nightscapes of world-famous cities from her earlier The Radiant Metropolis series, now entering into the distant, strikingly similar memories and mutual reflections that have linked China and Mexico since the time of ancient civilizations. Confronting the fragmentation and descending chaos of our era, between the mandala-like structure of the altar and the quantum-state fluctuation and dissolution, between ghostly skulls and illusory butterflies, between the female artist and the Virgin Mary, and between the glory and death of the bullfighter, she continually faces the eternal theme: the instantaneous transformation between life and death.
Inspired by direct experience at Western Day of the Dead celebrations and in the bullring, the artist has entered into a sustained meditation on simultaneous birth-anddeath, death-and-rebirth. By means of ceaseless formal and linguistic oscillation, she gathers different dimensions and spaces, revolving circles and disintegrating squares, ambiguous convex-concave illusions and the incantatory spell of curved textures, into a tremendous vibrating
energy field. This manifests an artistic conception of the crossing and resonance of life, death and civilizations.
The quantum-state aesthetics revealed in her painting offers us a new energy-field beauty: it takes the power of dissolution and, through its bright and luminous flickering, carries a sacred radiance that awakens mysterious and miraculous inner resonance, allowing the ideals of
humanism to undergo profound spiritual reflection within world history. To achieve such breadth and depth of resonance, artist Ruoheng Li has undertaken profound research and reflection on her artistic language. In terms of materials, she makes extensive use of gold foil and her self-invented “magic silver powder,” as well as aurora-like iridescent mother-of-pearl powder, creating shimmering gold and dreamlike nacreous hues. When the paintings
are illuminated by light, they emit a multicolored auroralike iridescence. In the wings of butterflies and the blooming of flowers, Eastern verdant green and Western golden yellow achieve perfect fusion under the gentle, affectionate gaze of an Eastern female sensibility.
The artist’s painting techniques also encompass tempera glazing, contemporary expressionist brushwork, as well as paper-cutting, collage, airbrushing, and other methods, allowing mixed media to radiate an unprecedented romantic splendor.
The shining resonance we experience is the antidote to our fragmented era—a salvific aesthetics of redemption brought by a new art infused with supernaturalist spirit to
a restless and anxious time.
Wandering freely between East and West, artist Ruoheng Li has immersed herself in extensive reading of historical events and civilizational symbols, entering deeply into the interior of art history, excavating the life energy of the feminine and the maternal, and thereby granting the
dormant maternal body of civilization a new radiance. This radiant art is also a homage and paean to the great traditions of different civilizations
